Statement from the Artist

I’ve realized later in life that when I was growing up I was always surrounded by things that fascinated me. I feel truly looking back that I was some sort of precocious kid. It got me into some trouble, but I think that constant questioning and curiosity has served me well into my adult life. This curiosity, regardless of what it was, always spawned some newfound knowledge, and that knowledge destroyed my old conception of the world in place of this new one. Essentially, that incessant curiosity was me constantly trying to make sense of this kaleidoscopic world that we live in.

And music, music really fascinated me. Why? First of all, I was always around music . My hometown was super into musical theater, my mom had me take piano lessons, and my dad was always playing guitar in his local dad band. So music was always there. But at the same time—and I think the constant exposure to music allowed me to discover this—was that there was something in music, in it of itself that completely captivated me.

Music is so visceral, you feel it completely yet there’s also this entirely different side to the world of music. This logical, sensical, sort of puzzle that I had to complete. All the patterns and little easter eggs composers and writers left for us (the audience), while still being able to carry the emotion of the song left me astounded. I always wanted to try and create things like that. To be clever and try and solve sort of this artistic puzzle to really perfect what I was trying to express. So this idea was something I really started to investigate and experiment with in my teens.

As I began to explore this, the craft of composition and music I began to also fall in love with many other aspects of music. I began learning various instruments, theory & harmony, orchestration, music history, you name it. Music really became the reason that I got out of bed every morning because I knew that with music I could travel to places I could never even dream of going with just my two feet. Music (and all art for that matter) became the thing that contextualized and conceptualized my worldview. So beautiful is art, this opportunity for the creator(s) to eloquently express themselves that it has been something that I’ve always wanted to be a part of. So the reason I pursued music as a career, and especially the reason I teach music is so I’m able to give the joy of music and art to others.
